how animal collective makes me FEELS

Today I bought Animal Collective's album Feels after practically listening Strawberry Jam to death, and not only does it come with some very wonderful cover art, it is also a very wonderful album.
Definately the best chillout album I've ever bought, Feels is much more acoustic than Strawberry Jam. I could seriously listen to it on repeat for over 24 hours and not get bored of it, and even after that i would probably look back at those 24+ hours as the best of my life.
I think its probably around half way through Flesh Canoe you come to realise how wonderful the world is, and then by the end of Bees you simply want to join a hippy commune and make bead necklaces for the rest of your life.

I also just found this pretty cool french site which has some live sessions from Animal Collective and other artists up for free download in video or mp3 form!
I strongly suggest you check out the live version of Flesh Canoe on that site, I think I probably like it more than the album version.

I'm back

After a month or three of silence, I am back from doing my GCSEs! And oh how a lot has happened since then. My musical interests have changed and I have been listening to A LOT of new bands. Im not forgetting the oldies though, oh no! Which brings us smoothly to the first thing I want to talk about in this post; Best Fwends.

A couple of weeks ago I finally got round to ordering their album (
play.com does it for around £5). At 34 tracks which add up to less than an hour of music you cant really go wrong, so as soon as it arrived I set about listening to it about 50 times on repeat all week and was most severely brainwashed by the funkiness of their tunes. The first track (definately one of the best on the album) "Aaww-Some" set down the rules from the off with the catchy chorus: "we are best fwends and dont you know that we are awesome!"
What follows is 28 more tracks of childish, happy, DIY electro-pop-funk-punk-rock, with an instrumental and some remixes on the end for good measure.
One simple fact about this album is that listening to it makes you happy. No matter how depressed or angry you are when you put the album on, by the end of it you'll be jumping round your room with a grin on your face shouting "TIGERS ON VASELINE! WE TAKE BATHS AND WE GET CLEEN!"
This could possibly be one of the greatest feel good albums ever made, you simply cant help but dance around in your chair to tracks like "dream off" and "sk8 or live".
Yes, the album really is this good (even if it did win VICE magazine's worst album of the month award) and i give it a 8/10 on the awesome-o-meter.

Now for something totally different, ska punk.
Well, I say ska punk but I really dont know very much about ska so Ill just stick with that.
Streetlight Manifesto are a band I have been listening to a lot of recently after downloading their album "Somewhere in the Between". To be perfectly honest I dont really know how to describe them very well...
They are a guitarist, bassist and drummer, along with two saxophone players, a trumpet player and a trombone player.
One of the greatest things about this band is the brass section, which give Streetlight punchy, fruity sound and perfectly compliment Tomas Kalnoky's slightly gravelly vocals.

And finally, a note about the blog.
Ive been thinking of making some changes around here recently for the millionth time, possibly even a domain change, so if it looks a bit wierd/different/has another new name next time you come to look at the blog, its perfectly normal :)

Tin Can Telephone

i know its been a loooooooooooong time since the last post but ive got stuff on so this will probably be the only post you'll get for a while, so im going to try and make it a good one :)

first up is a new project from one half of my favourite band Tiger Force. Tin Can Telephone's songs are much lighter and "tinklier" than TF, reminiscent of their acoustic instore performance at PureGroove records. they sound (to me) like a cross between Architecture in Helsinki and Los Campesinos and so far have four songs, all of which are downloadable on their myspace (yay free music!) which can be found
here.

while im thinking about LC!, their album came out on the 25th of february and although i havent been able to get my hands on it yet im sure its pretty sweet so you should check that out if you can!

another DBTV update now though, as last week Harry and Rory played their first ever gig as DBTV! sadly i could not attend due to unforseen circumstances, but i have seen videos and pictures (taken by the extraordinary Isaac Eastgate of
Zarcorp and the now dead Under The Radar) and they looked pretty awesome, so look out for DBTV doing shows near you in the future! also, they finished the track for their upcoming UF records release (a split with Videohippos) which is up on their myspace now for you listening pleasure here

the latest MSDJ epsiode features Jellica as the guest host, and is about 30 minutes of awesomeness in mp3 form. that can be found
here

and last but not least heres a couple of gems i found on youtube. the first is a video of japanther live, look at the couple on the left hand side at the front :) and the second is simply funny (and very catchy so be prepared to have it stuck in your head for a while)

Falco Lombardi

aside from have a totally awesome name, this guy makes chiptunes like nobody else!
melodic, bleepy dance tracks with foot-stomping rythms make his tunes something special, with tracks like "The Witness" leading the charge in an emerging UK chiptune scene. along with artists such as Sabrepulse, Henry Homesweet and Combat Dave, Falco Lombardi is definately a name to look out for in the future.

MSDJ

MSDJ or micro sound dee-jay is the official podcast of 8bitcollective. its presented by Lameboy and Unicorn Dream Attack, otherwise known as Logan and Stefan. this comedic duo keep the podcast going in between songs and are, for me, one of the best things about the show, along with learning about new music.
there is currently five episodes, each one around forty minutes of absolute chiptune bliss.

Gerty Farish

these guys did a tape along with Best Fwends which came out recently
i really really like them.
they have some super cool songs like "here comes hairy claws" which i have listened to about fourty times in the past 2 days
also, they are quite a bit like best fwends so dont listen to them if you're obsessed with sound quality.

Pull Tiger Tail

again with the tiger bands!
ive been into these guys for about 6 months now and was thinking its about time i did a post on them
im recently finding it really hard to think of words to describe a lot of the bands i post about on here, so ill stick with the two i use the most; amazing and awesome.
and PTT are most definately that! the first song i ever heard was the demo of Animator which is on their myspace and after that it was all i listened to for the next week. the simple, catchy chorus will stick in your head and keep you up all night thinking about it.
aside from the well written, catchy and well played tunes these three guys are pumping out, the main attraction to these guys for me is the feeling i get while listening to them. its the kind of feeling you get when you watch one of those little "heart-wrenching" documentary segments about african children in the middle of comic relief, you almost feel guilty for enjoying yourself while you listen to the song.

definately a band to check out.

websites.

i recently got an account on last.fm.
i have no idea why its so popular... so far i have found it to be slow, confusing and generally it looks better than it actually works.

on the other hand i also got an account on
8bitcollective, an amazing website where practically all chiptune artists upload their music. you can find some really awesome tracks if you look through the pages and pages of uploads.
